#185 - A Conversation with Lindsay Pinkelman
Lindsay Pinkelman, a mother of three, is the host of the MY SCHOOL COUNSELOR PODCAST and a dedicated mentor to young athletes seeking scholarships. Her lifelong passion for sports, which began with T-ball at age 5, led her to excel in softball during high school, earning her a spot on Greenway High School's Varsity team and a place with the Arizona Vipers.
However, her narrative takes a poignant turn in college when she pursued a Master's in School Counseling at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This decision wasn't just about personal growth but also a deep-seated desire to be a guiding light for fellow athletes. Life, as it often does, had other plans, and Lindsay's story took an unexpected and profoundly emotional twist.
In our conversation, we will delve into that pivotal moment, exploring the depth of Lindsay's emotions, insights on marriage and faith, God winks, and her enduring commitment to supporting and championing athletes.

#183 - A Conversation with Jashar Banks
Our next guest, Jashar Banks, is an exceptional young man who has faced challenges not only finding creative ways to live with SCI, but also venturing into the world seeking his first paid job and showing employers creative workarounds for how those living with SCI can be valuable assets in a workplace that requires physical movement. Louise met Jashar at a beach event, where he experienced something new – not just surfing in the ocean as a paraplegic, but being at the ocean for the first time even though he grew up only miles from the coast. Come listen in on the start of a young person's journey of exploration and self-discovery as 21 year old Jashar talks about living on his own, seeking out positive mentors, and making peace with a difficult childhood growing up in the lower Bronx. His story, though not widely known online, is bound to inspire you. Despite life's multiple hurdles, Jashar is a shining example of turning adversity not just into strength but into tenderness for himself and others as he makes a positive impact in the world. Join Louise as we explore the beginnings of what is already a remarkable journey and Jashar's dedication to education and leaning into vulnerability and service.

#181 - A Conversation with WAGS of SCI
Elena Pauly and Brooke Pagé, both caregivers to partners with recent Spinal Cord Injuries, felt the deep isolation that comes with their role. Their connection on Instagram, fueled by their close proximity in Vancouver, became a lifeline. In November of that year, they birthed WAGS of SCI on Instagram, a community that not only hosted local caregiver events but also united "inter-abled" women - wives, partners, and girlfriends of those living with SCI. Together, they provide unwavering support for the unique challenges that come with loving someone with a spinal cord injury. Elena and Brooke tirelessly advocate and reach out, with long-term dreams of establishing a non-profit to support inter-abled relationships, boosting mental, emotional, and physical well-being awareness, and funding special trips for deserving couples.
Join Louise in an eye opening conversation with two very special advocates for those who are injured, but specifically for their caretakers and loved ones. Be reminded How deep emotions promote change and hear about the advocacy work of caregiver pay.

#176 - A Conversation with Rich Holzman, EMT, Firefighter, Coach
Imagine discovering something from the past and seeing it anew with a fresh insightful perspective. A previously released interview from the past sheds light on some of the most courageous, selfless among us who need compassion and care just like anyone else: EMTs and first responders. In this special episode, we have the privilege of revisiting with fresh eyes what it takes to be a first responder with Rich Holzman - EMT, firefighter, coach, commander, and transformative human being, and we have the privilege of understanding more deeply the weight of lifesaving responsibilities for first responders and EMTs which extends far beyond the immediate rescue efforts. The nature of their work can affect their physical well-being. The irregular and often long working hours, coupled with the physical demands of the rescues themselves, can also affect their mental health well-being, can lead to exhaustion, sleep disturbances, and injuries. Saving lives is not just a job; it's a deeply ingrained calling driven by a sense of duty to save human life. However, with the relentless demands of their profession, comes an often-overlooked challenge—the impact of secondary trauma.

Known for his big air, speed, and style on the slopes, Roy Tuscany was on the path to realizing his dream until a life-altering injury in 2006 paralyzed him from the waist down. Inspired by the support he received during his own recovery, Roy transformed his experience into a positive force by creating the High Fives Non Profit Foundation. Roy now helps other disabled athletes return to the winter sports they love. His remarkable journey earned him the "spirit inspires" award from Disabled Sports USA in 2011, and he held the World Record for the most high fives in a 24-hour period. Join us to hear another beautiful story of trauma integration: paying it forward.

#173- Our guest Steve Corn - Patient Advocacy Tips Regarding Medical Bills
Steve Corn, a music industry titan in Los Angeles, faced his own trauma and pivoted his life in a new direction: patient advocacy regarding medical bills. Understanding the overwhelm of trauma, he enlightens hospital patients about the expenses associated with medical procedures and skillfully handles for them the massive bills that follow, even when the patient has health insurance. His motivation stems from a life-altering event that occurred in his family in the blink of an eye. Steve’s advocacy doesn't stop with tips on how to work with insurance companies. Did he say meniscus? Yes, he did. Join Louise to learn an imaginative and scientific way to describe the trauma experience, surprising tips for skin wounds, as well as how to help your friends who are facing a medical crisis.

#167 - Preparing a Family for Another Transition
Despite Continued Setbacks, We Move Forward
Guiding a family through a traumatic event requires compassion, empathy, and a delicate balance of support and engagement. When faced with profound grief, it is crucial to provide a safe space for open family dialogue, together in family meetings. Acknowledging wrongs and supporting forgiveness can be powerful choices in the emotional healing process, allowing individuals to release the weight of resentment to foster their own personal growth. However, forgiveness is a deeply personal journey, and it can never be rushed nor forced. Patiently listening to each family member's unique experience of pain and loss helps create an atmosphere of understanding which further the journey of acceptance. As we close out season 3, Louise gives us rare glimpses into family conversations as her family makes another transition through Archer’s brave, harrowing journey of SCI recovery, moving from the halls of the Shepherd center to a begin a new chapter at the next hospital and rehab center Baltimore, Maryland.
In this episode:
Diane Festa, Dame in the Order of Malta, Atlanta Angel who cared for Louise so she could care for Archer.
Dr. Ray Talucci, the Chief of Trauma at Atlanticare Medical System in Atlantic City, NJ who provided profound words of wisdom in the last family meeting in the ICU.
