#254 How SCI Life Experience Shapes a Researcher’s Focus with Dr. Trevor Dyson-Hudson, Kessler Foundation
Dr. Trevor Dyson-Hudson's journey from a small-town upbringing to a leader in spinal cord injury rehabilitation is a testament to resilience, adaptation, innovation, and the transformative power of mentorship. A rugby accident in medical school changed the course of his life living with quadriplegia and leading him to change course and specialize in rehabilitation research. Now serving as the Director of the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Research at Kessler Foundation—one of the 18 Model SCI Facilities in the US nationally recognized for their rehabilitation research—Dr. Dyson-Hudson is dedicated to advancing mobility, preventing secondary medical complications, and enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals with SCI.
Dr. Dyson-Hudson’s insights shine a light on the urgency of early intervention support for SCI families, and the critical need for sustainable funding in rehabilitation. He shares how customized wheelchairs, vocational rehabilitation, and caregiver support can be life-changing in fostering independence. Through groundbreaking research, collaboration, and advocacy, his work continues to shape the future of SCI care while emphasizing an essential truth: the balance between helping others and practicing self-care is key to lasting impact.
