#266 Exploring Neuroplasticity in Spinal Cord Injury with Dr. Ann Choe
What if brain scans could help unlock the mysteries of spinal cord injury recovery? In this episode, we speak with Dr. Ann Choe, a neuroscientist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, whose work in neuroimaging is helping reshape the way we understand healing after spinal trauma. With a background in computer and biomedical engineering, Dr. Choe brings a systems-level perspective to one of medicine’s most complex challenges.
We trace her journey from engineering into neuroscience and explore her passion for neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt. Dr. Choe shares how imaging technology is uncovering the hidden pathways of recovery and why personalized, data-driven rehabilitation may hold the key for many living with chronic spinal cord injuries.
This conversation reveals the power of collaboration in research, the promise of new biomarkers, and the importance of hope—rooted not just in science, but in the brain’s own capacity for change.

#265 Reimagining Wheelchairs as Art with Laura Brody
What if wheelchairs, walkers, and prosthetics could be seen not only as tools for access but also as works of art? In this episode, we sit down with Laura Brody—artist, costume designer, and founder of Opulent Mobility—to explore the power of reimagining mobility devices as artistic expressions. From her Los Angeles studio, Laura shares how her personal and professional journey led her to challenge societal assumptions around disability, aging, and design.
Together, we dive into how art can create connection, promote inclusion, and transform public perception. Laura explains how her exhibits have brought together disabled and able-bodied artists alike, creating a community rooted in dignity, identity, and empowerment. We also explore the therapeutic value of artistic creation and the vital need for accessibility for all (wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, suitcases on wheels, anything on wheels!)—not just in public spaces, but in the art world itself.
Join us as we explore how art can become advocacy, and how accessible design can be both functional and beautiful.

#264 Walking with Anthony: A Journey of Hope and Strength
In this powerful and deeply personal episode, Micki Purcell shares the journey that led to the founding of Walking With Anthony, a nonprofit inspired by her son Anthony’s catastrophic spinal cord injury. From the moment of the accident, Micki was thrust into a world of trauma, complex medical decisions, and overwhelming financial pressures. Instead of accepting paralysis as a life sentence, she chose to fight—creating a foundation dedicated to helping other families navigate the long road to rehabilitation and hope.
Micki opens up about the emotional rollercoaster of the early days, the critical importance of rehab, and the heartbreaking insurance limitations that so many SCI families face. She also explores what it takes to run a nonprofit, maintain resilience, and mobilize a community to uplift those living with spinal cord injuries.
Micki is on a mission to fight for insurance coverage for ongoing necessary, spinal cord injury, rehab rehabilitation. Listen in and hear how.
Her story is one of love, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to recovery—not just for her son, but for the thousands of others walking a similar path.

#261 The Healing Power of Movement in Grief with Hana Kamea Kemble
In this profound conversation, Hana Kamea Kemble joins Louise Phipps Senft to explore the layered experience of grief, trauma recovery, and the healing power of movement. Together, they examine how early attachment styles and childhood experiences shape our emotional responses to loss, and how grief—when unacknowledged—can manifest physically and psychologically over time.
Hana offers deep insights into the phases of grief, the role of shock and trauma in shaping healing journeys, and the importance of compassionate caregiving. Hana shares how movement therapy and embodied practices can unlock stuck emotions and foster emotional release, especially for those navigating physical limitations or chronic trauma.
This conversation is both a gentle guide and a powerful reminder that healing is possible, and that grief, when fully met, can transform us.

#260 Science Breakthroughs & Legislative Advocacy Now for Spinal Cord Injury Research with Matthew Rodreick
Matthew Rodreick, Executive Director of Unite 2 Fight Paralysis (U2FP), joins us to explore the current landscape of spinal cord injury (SCI) research and advocacy. As the father of Gabriel, who lives with a C5 complete SCI, Matthew brings a deeply personal perspective to the fight for curative treatments.
We discuss the urgency of this moment in SCI science, and the troubling implications of recent federal funding cuts. Matthew shares why community-driven advocacy is essential. While there are almost 18,000 SCIs annually in the US, our number is too small for rare disease protection and not large enough to capture attention for large federal funding. This episode is more than a conversation—it’s a call to action. Learn how you can support the movement, stay informed, and help drive change.

#259 "He Walked Again" With Guy Romain
In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Guy Romain, founder of NeuroFit360, a cutting-edge neuro physical therapy clinic that’s pushing the boundaries of outpatient spinal cord injury recovery. With locations in Florida and Atlanta, NeuroFit360 is dedicated to helping clients reclaim independence and mobility through innovative, high-intensity rehab after their inpatient and more traditional outpatient rehab.
Dr. Romain is a physical therapist specializing in neuro recovery. He holds a B.S. in Health Science from Montclair State University, a Master of Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University, and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy with a focus on SCI from the Neuro Recovery Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. He’s also certified in Robotic Gait Training through Hocoma and Ekso Bionics.
In previous episodes, we shared the story of Maurice- Andre, one of NeuroFit360’s standout clients. Maurice, who lives with incomplete paraplegia (L1-L2) and was told he would never walk again trained with NeuroFit360 and went on to compete in multiple triathlons. A remarkable journey of strength and resilience.
We look forward to sharing Dr. Romain’s perspective on recovery, innovation, and the future of neuro rehab.

#256 Healing Grief through Movement: with Hana Kamea Kemble
Today’s guest, Hana Kamea Kemble, is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Board-Certified Dance/Movement Therapist specializing in trauma recovery through body-mind integration. With over 22 years of experience, Hana founded a movement-based healing program, The Movement Arc, to help individuals—including those with spinal cord injuries—process grief, release stored emotions, and reconnect with their bodies through dance.
In this conversation, we’ll hear how feelings are designed to move through the body and not stick around in the body and how dance, song, and any form of vibration or rhythm, no matter how micro, creates a movement pathway giving grief and sadness permission to leave the body. Hana shares why trauma and grief get stuck in the body, how that manifests, and how movement, breath, and awareness can help release them. She explains the impact of guilt, how it manifests physically, and why healing is about more than just physical recovery. Her insights offer a fresh perspective on navigating life after paralysis, including how families can acknowledge their emotions and process their own grief while supporting a loved one’s journey. By integrating Somatic Psychology, mindfulness, and expressive arts, Hana provides a pathway to resilience beyond traditional SCI rehabilitation.

#249 Personalized Ongoing Out Patient Therapy: The Push to Walk Story
In this episode, we talk with Cynthia Templeton, mother of Darren Templeton, who sustained a C5 incomplete spinal cord injury in July 2004 at the age of 18 after diving into shallow water at the Jersey Shore. Upon returning home, after attending outpatient therapy at a renowned SCI rehab facility in California far away from their home, together they sought to create a close to home out patient SCI therapy option in New Jersey for ongoing daily and weekly rehab. Cynthia and Darren co-founded Push to Walk in 2007, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with paralysis and neuromuscular conditions by providing state-of-the-art SCI exercise equipment, and activities based therapy premised on neuroscience findings of the power of the mind to focus intentionally on the exercise to enhance the outcome.
